New Zealand in 8 days – Final Part

In eight days we had seen some amazing sites and even though we covered only a small portion of the north island, we got a great feel for what makes NZ such a great place to visit. On our last day we visited a small zoo/butterfly house called Butterfly Creek. I had been wanting to visit right from the early planning stages of the trip. It was a great chance to have my first go at photographing butterflies, and it proved a great learning experience.

New Zealand in 8 days – Part five

Whitianga: 6:30am and a quiet and timid voice says, “Alex, I think you need to look out the window… don’t be mad at me for waking you up”. I dragged myself out of bed and pulled back the blinds to be greeted with an amazing sunrise over a perfect seascape… grabbing my camera I headed out the door, then back again and grabbed some clothes…

I spent over an hour walking around barefoot in the sand dunes and ocean. It was the most peaceful and relaxed I had felt the whole trip. The beach was empty, air was clear and everything seemed right! Wherever I pointed the camera there was a great scene to be shot, this morning proved to be my favourite photography moment of the entire trip.

I hope you enjoy these photos, they recreate not even 1/10th of how it felt to be there! As always click for larger images.

Wintergarden Flowers – New Zealand

The Auckland Domain is a wonderful place to visit for someone interested in the horticultural arts, with lots of ponds, gardens, the Winter-garden Glasshouses and Fernz Fernery. The glasshouses were brilliant, one temperate and one tropical (heated) that included a Lilly pond. With my trusty Tamron 90mm 1:1, I crawled over every inch of the two houses inspecting the wonderful flowers… my companions showed great patience!

I’ve included quite a few photos in this post, but I feel they are all too amazing not to view! (the flowers, not the photos).

New Zealand in 8 days – Part two

Our good friends took us on a tour of Auckland and it’s surrounding sights on our second full day. The weather was still quite off, but we managed to stay dry, albeit wind swept.

As usual click on the images for a larger version, some are panoramics, so they’re better viewed BIG! I’ve also added a ‘Like?’ link on the main menu at the top, it takes you straight to the Unstable Image Facebook page, please feel free to like and keep in touch with the blog that way.

Mount Eden is a cinder cone... I just called it a crater.

New Zealand in 8 Days – Part one

So my lady and I decided to head to New Zealand for a short tour around the North Island. We drove a bit over 1000km and got to see some pretty amazing sites. I thought I’d share some of my shots…

For those who are not that familiar with NZ, it’s referred to as the land of the long white cloud. This proved a constant challenge for me to get good shots as the sky was either blown out or the landscapes were plunged into darkness. I got around this in two ways; composition and HDR. Using ‘creative’ compositions in some shots meant I could limit the amount of sky in the shot and allow the camera to expose the rest of the image correctly.

The second method, HDR (High Dynamic Range imaging) meant I could combine (using software in post production) three bracketed images (-ev, 0 ev and +ev). Basically, each image would have a part of the scene correctly exposed, and when combined you end up with a blended image all elements at the same exposure level. There are lots of great sources on the web about HDR, some people are not fans as the image can look dreamy/faked etc. Personally, I quite enjoy them as they can be quite striking, plus they allowed me to make the most of an overcast situation :D .

These first few photos were taken at North Head, which was a Naval installation up until 1996.

Red Bull City Scramble

On my recent trip to New Zealand, I was spending the day with my close friend Robbo. We had no solid plans but had seen a sign advertising a free Endurocross event that was being held on the harbor in Westhaven. So being motorbike fans, we headed over to have a look. We were greeted by 80 riders, 10000 spectators and the toughest track I’ve ever seen! Spectators had amazing access to the track, as we watched the qualifying and race laps.

There were lots of spills, few injuries and some amazing riding to be seen! I used my 15-85mm lens with polarising filter with the camera set to shutter priority mode (1/2000th to capture the fast movement). I would have hated to have to shoot this with film, having high frames per second meant I could just start clicking and nail that shot with ease.

Flower Focus – Joe

The main reason I chose to focus on flowers for this series is due the enjoyment I get from photographing them. The beauty in photographing flowers is the time that you can spend finding the perfect angles and playing around with settings without worrying that the subject is going to get spooked and escape.

For me, spending the time outdoors gives me the opportunity to breathe out a little, focus on the moment and leave behind the everyday worries. Hope you enjoy them.
